Grace Kavochi McBride

With roots in Kenya and having spent most of my adult life living and working in the United States, I possess a distinctive perspective shaped by diverse cultural influences and by experience teaching in Kenya and the USA. With my unique blend of cultural and classroom experience, I advocate for a community where everyone fits in (Fit-Me-In) and where every person is valued and given an opportunity to realize their potential as an individual and a contributor to their community.

I use my teaching experience and approach to mentor rural school youth and women in much-needed skills, from the basics of hygiene and sanitation to reading and technology literacy to the basics of financial awareness. My methods are common approaches such as table banking, merry-go-round, and home libraries.

I am an advocate for ensuring that safe drinking water is available in every home, thereby removing the burden on girls and women who are forced to walk long distances to fetch water. My goal is for each family to have a well (a borehole in rural Kenya) so that girls and women can be free to focus on their personal advancement. I also advocate for solar projects to provide irrigation and lighting in homes.

My greatest achievement is through the individualized mentorship approach model. Through this model, I can identify each family’s needs and the underlying causes of their situation, and strategically plan how to address their problems.

These projects are an independent effort, and Fit-Me-In does not solicit funds from others.

Outside of Fit-Me-In, I am continuing to work on my personal goal of writing and becoming a published children’s book author focused on traditional African folklore.
